Something I’ve been thinking about more carefully this year and wanted to get the community’s take on, because I think the conventional wisdom on this is a bit muddier than it needs to be.

The standard affiliate marketing advice is that recurring SaaS commissions compound beautifully over time. Everyone says it. But I’ve rarely seen anyone actually run the specific break-even calculation openly — the point at which a recurring commission definitively outperforms a one-time CPA deal on the same referral.

So let’s do it properly.

The baseline comparison

Take a realistic scenario:

Option A — One-time CPA: $200 flat per conversion. Common in SaaS. Paid once. Resets to zero.

Option B — Recurring commission: 30% of a $50/month SaaS subscription = $15/month per referral. Looks modest.

Here’s how the maths plays out over time on a single referral:

MonthCPA totalRecurring total
1$200$15
3$200$45
6$200$90
12$200$180
14$200$210 ✓
24$200$360
36$200$540

Break-even arrives at month 14. After that every month is pure advantage to the recurring model — and the CPA deal paid out nothing additional while that gap was opening.

Scale that across 20 referrals and the monthly
