Affiliates have a love and hate relationship with spy tools. We hate them because they can expose our campaigns to other affiliates, potentially causing them to not be as effective. But, at the same time, we also love them because the amount of data they can provide us for our campaigns is immeasurable.
Are spy tools absolutely essential? Not exactly, but just consider this when you think you're saving money by not having a spy tool: You're going to spend way more money than your spy tool's monthly subscription by testing various landing pages/creatives to figure out what works than to start with what other affiliates are currently already running with success. First, use what you find in spy tools as a performance benchmark, and then once you have something that's converting you can try some of your own ideas to improve the performance. There's no point trying to reinvent the wheel initially (even if you think you know what you're doing).
