How Do Affiliate Networks Identify Your Landing Page

First, I'd like to say I know next to nothing about cloaking.

I'm wondering though how affiliate networks identify the landing pages of their affiliates? Is it simply from the 'referrer' header?

I know you can hide your landing page with meta, or double meta refreshes, but they are slow... particularly on mobile.

I've been messing around with some landing pages and it seems that the following code doesn't send a referrer:

<meta name="referrer" content="no-referrer">

Is it really that simple to completely hide your landing page from an affiliate network, or do they have other methods to find the referring
