Meta has started testing facial recognition technology on its platforms, Facebook and Instagram, aiming to enhance user security. This new approach is designed to protect users from malicious ads featuring celebrity images, prevent fake accounts, and simplify account recovery for hacked profiles.
Fighting Celeb-Bait Ads and Fake Accounts
In many ads, celebrity images are used to grab user attention. These ads often violate Meta’s policies and may lead to sites collecting personal data or requesting money transfers. Such fraudulent advertising has led to multiple legal actions against Meta.Meta is developing facial recognition algorithms to automatically compare images from suspicious ads with celebrity profile photos on Facebook and Instagram. If a match confirms a fraudulent ad, it will be blocked. All collected data is deleted immediately after the verification to ensure privacy protection.
In addition, Meta plans to use this technology to detect fake accounts that mimic celebrity profiles, providing extra protection for users who may trust these profiles and fall into scams.
