Meta recently ran an experiment with AI-generated Instagram profiles, designed to act like real users. Some answered dating questions, others gave advice or played friendly roles like a "grandfatherly" figure. These accounts were part of a 2023 test but popped up again recently, causing a lot of backlash.
Users were upset, calling the idea creepy and saying it made social media feel even more artificial. Many were angry when they found out they couldn’t block the accounts. In response, Meta deleted the profiles and clarified they weren’t launching anything new, just testing AI features.

Personally, I’m not a fan of AI profiles. Social media already struggles with authenticity, and adding bots pretending to be people doesn’t help.
