This website crawls the web and I assume it categorizes the number of websites for each network by identifying the code (JS or similar) to see how they are either monetizing the website or also if they are buying traffic from other networks (pixel).

Although I'd take this with a grain of salt, as some networks change their scripts constantly, therefore making it a bit more complicated to track and also because this tool only goes down to the top 1m sites in terms of traffic.
