Where to Start

I really need help with where to start. I am a web developer for a long time but never work with Affiliates before I don't know how to pick a product or if should I promote my own product or services, or get straight forward for Amazon afillaites. Guide me where to start before starting with Pops Guide - The Beginners Guide. Any ideas will be all thankful
