What resources would you recommend to someone just starting out?

Guy is very low on budget, Ill probably get him the forum membership. But any resources like books/guides that you can recommend for absolute beginners? This is something I am trying to introduce him to, and get him to develop interest. I would like to help him out but he needs some basic knowledge first and I don't really have the time to teach him from
