It looks like the Facebook Audience network for publishers wasn't really making them enough money to continue pursuing it.
They are still keeping the network for apps but it won't be possible to use it for websites and instant articles anymore.
This caught my attention because 2-3 years ago we were using that network to monetize viral sites and @Luke had a small network that worked pretty well for people who weren't able to apply with their own
